Twitter is the micro-blogging program that has been sweeping across the world much like a really bad cold. Except in this case, you might be happy to contract the Twitter Bug! People use twitter for many different reasons.
- Business people use Twitter for marketing and communication.
- Every day people use it for microblogging. When you just want to say something briefly.
- Business Networking
- Getting the latest scoop and news on a certain topic.
- Some use Twitter to streamline communications.

Since Twitter does not have s systematic way of finding people with their service (other than with your email contacts) here are some useful tools in finding people on Twitter that have similar interests:
1. Find People by Category on Twitter with Twellow.com
Twellow is a pretty cool service but it can kind of be unfair to people with not a lot of followers. Why is this? Well with Twellow you do searches by category, but that’s the good part. But when you click on a category the person with the most followers in that particular category is at the top. So if you don’t have a lot of followers on Twitter, you probably won’t be found on Twellow. But if you are just looking to add some new followers who have the same interests… this is perfect.

2. Use Twitter’s Own Search Page at Search.Twitter.com
Yes, Twitter actually has one of these, which most people don’t even know about. If you already did, than a hardy pat on the back for ya. With this site you just type in a keyword that is relevant to the kind of people you want to follow. For instance, if you think Michael Jordan is amazing and want to find people who think so too, just type in “Michael Jordan” and you can follow the people who have recently tweeted about Michael and choose to follow them if you like. This is an easy way to build up your followers too because you are getting targeted results.

3. Also Use Keywords with TweetScan
Tweet Scan is similar to how the search tool with Twitter works, but it also shows you on the main page what the most searched keywords are. Interestingly, Fibromyalgia is actually the most searched topic with Tweet Scan, but probably because spammers are looking for a way to follow people with that disease and use Twitter as a marketing ploy. Spamming could be the ruin of Twitter someday, but for now you can enjoy the simplicity of microblogging and use tweet Scan to find people on Twitter that will write helpful Tweets for you to read. It’s a good way to keep up with successful bloggers and all of their posts as well.

4. Use the Power of TwitterPacks
This site looks incredibly cheesy but it can be fairly useful so I decided to add it to the list. It is a place to find twitterers by topic, location, company, or even events. It’s actually a pretty novel idea they have come up with. At the home page of Twitterpacks.com you will see all of the methods of finding people who are on Twitter.
The best part about Twitterpacks: They have an autopack feature which allows you to mass-follow Twitter users as well, and this is again by topic. You simply enter your Twitter username and you can click the boxes of the twitter users you want to follow or just select all, and it will use your account to follow all of them in an instant, or maybe a few instances if you are trying to follow a lot of people at once. But a word of warning, try to keep your number of followers the same as the number of people you are following. Otherwise you just look like a great big spam machine, and no one likes a spammer.

5. CrazyBob’s Twubble Service for twitter
This is a different kind of way to search for friends that you may already be using, but you are probably using the slow method. Twubble searches through the people you are following and finds the people THEY are following as well. The search takes a few minutes, depending on how many Twitterers it has to search through. After the scan you can simply add all the people you want to start following. This way you can sort of complete the circle of friendship..sigh.. how nice.
But seriously, it’s a pretty cool site that helps you find people to follow you may have missed from your email contact search.

6. Follow MrTweet on Twitter
This is a pretty original idea from the maker’s of this website, and MrTweet’s phone would be ringing off the hook IF they actually had one. All you need to do is start following Mrtweet (same username) and he will make recommendations for people to follow. But the neat thing is that you can GET followers by neing recommended to other people as well. I think it works by looking at the content of your tweets and finding others with silmilar interests for you. I have read some reports that it works and others that it does not work, so it’s up to you to check it out. I have also heard that since they are so many followingt MrTweet now that the waiting line is causing delays. Who knows.

There are new tools popping up all the time so I could not possibly list them all. But if you came across a way to find people on Twitter that you want to share with us, feel free to leave a comment below. We would love to hear from you.

Thanks for the article. I have this page bookmarked for reference. What I meant to say is that I initially thought Twitter was annoying, but I’m starting to see the value in using it.
