How to Make Google Webmaster Tools Work with Wordpress
-
Google Webmaster Tools is a great way to find out all kinds of things about your website or blog and see if there are any errors you need to fix or simply a place where you can let Google know about your sitemap and make sure everything gets indexed properly.
Some of you may have had a hard time verifying your Wordpress blog with Google webmaster tools so here I will show you the simple steps to take to get this done.
1. Login to your webmaster tool account.
2. Once you have added your website (which should be a very simple process) go to your dashboard.
3. Next the url where your wordpress blog is you should see “Verify”. Click on this.
4. You will have 2 options: to either enter a meta tag or upload an HTML file. Choose Upload HTML file.
5. Once you choose “upload HTML file” Google Webmaster Tools will give you the name of the file you need to create.
6. Copy this code which will be something like googlelalalalalalala.html.
7. Now you will need to login to your wordpress account and click on write new page.
8. Now you will paste that file name into the Title and make sure your permalink is the same too, “yourblog.com/googlelalalalalala.html.
9. You probably don’t want this to be a page on your blog shown to the world so on the right of your screen just click “keep post private”
10. Click the publish button.
11. Go back to Webmaster Tools and click verify. This may take a few minutes after you publish the page
12. That’s it. You should be all set and Google Webmaster Tools will tell you all about your website and there are any errors you need to fix.
13. You can also add your sitemap for better indexing and control how often or not they will search through your wordpress blog.
Hopefully you will not run into any problems with this method of setting up your wordpress blog with Google Webmaster Tools. It is a very useful tool so make sure you browse around to see all that it has to offer. After all, it’s Google’s good side that you want to stay on so it helps that they offer a service that lets you know what they are looking for. Try to fix any errors as soon as you can too.
My favorite part about GWT is seeing not only how many links are coming into my site, but exactly where they are coming from. I will often check out these other blogs or forums and put in my $.02 contribution as well.
So it always helps to link to someone’s blog or website if you found it helpful, even if you get nothing in return. You just never know if they may do the same for you someday.
