Do I have to Ping My WordPress Blog?

WordPress Does the Pinging for You!

Wondering if you need to worry about pinging your wordpress blog?  Well now you don’t have to worry about it because it is all automatic.  Of course you can turn that option off but if you want the world to know that you have just made a great post this is perfect.

So what is pinging?  Well I love to use metaphors so let me say it like this.  When you “ping” your blog post it is like putting the flag up on your mailbox when you are sending out a letter.  You are letting the mailman know that there is something new in there.  Same thing with your blog.  Contrary to popular belief, pinging your blog will not necessarily drive more traffic to yoru site or build link juice or anything like that but you are letting all the blog communities know that you have some new stuff there.

This will also prompt the search engines to send their little bots over to your site to see what all the hub-bub is about so hopefully you will be cached sooner, although it could still take a while.

How to set up the automatic pinging.

WordPress is indeed the most powerful blogging platform on the earth and here is just another reason why.  Now the default setting will already be set up to automatically ping your blog for you, but there are a few settings you can change.   WordPress is set up to use pingomatic pinging service but you can change this if you want.

Step 1.  Login to your wordpress account

Step 2. Once in the admin panel click on the settings tab on the right.

Step 3. Click on “Writing” and you will see a page of options.

Step 4.  At the bottom of the page add any pinging services you want to use in replacement of or in addition to pingomatic.

So now you don’t have to worry about taking the time to ping after every single post you make.  And any amoutn of time saved is time you can use towards something a lot more fun..

[...] Now if you have a wordpress blog, then you are automatically pinging your posts every time you publish them, and you don’t have to worry about this.  You may not even realize this but it is happening.  You can change the default to ping to other services besides Ping-o-matic, and I have written a post on how to add pinging services to your wordpress blog.
